So, we're officially less than a week away from one of my favorite every-four years events (not sure if there's a super-smart term for that frequency). The Summer Olympics. Beijing this year and I can't wait. Besides LOVING the Olympics, I do have to admit to those of you who don't know that they always make me cry. Always. The little montage they do about the athlete who overcame everything possible to get there to compete in one race, jump, dive, etc.
The best thing about the Olympics are the things we learn from them:
1. Hard work does pay off.
In the day to day crap we all deal with sometimes it can seem like hard work really only leads to more work. The Olympics prove to us this isn't true.
2. Cheaters never win.
Well, they may at first. But then a committee finds out they used steroids and they take away your medal. The only part that really stinks about this is the poor guy/girl who didn't get to stand up on the medal stand because of the stinky cheating athlete.
3. Everybody fits in somewhere.
There are all shapes and sizes of people in the Olympics. From the massive shotputter to the little bendy gymnast, it really lets us all know no matter what size we come in, there can be something for us. As long as we're not just fat and lazy :)
4. God bless America.
No matter what is going on with politics or what not, there is something about the National Anthem playing when an American athlete stands up for a gold medal that always gives me chills. Makes me grateful for all the people who have fought for our country (and those who still are). This can be translated to insert your country here, too, I'm sure of it.
So, I'll await it with the rest of the world. And something really cool for those of you near me... The City of Decatur is doing a Screen on the Green at Agnes Scott College to show the opening ceremonies at 7:30 PM on Friday, so you should come join if you're nearby! Now you make it sound like you only cry at the Olympics commercials because they are so wrought with emotion...fess up. You also cry every time you watch "A League of Their Own"!
